Sharing Hope at Easter
Samuel shares with us how his church in East London used our Hope letters as part of their Easter experience.
We wanted to go big on Easter this year. It’s such an important part of our calendar and central to our faith. Our aim was to take our church, Christ Church Spitalfields, on a journey through every chapter of the Easter narrative. We put on a series of services across Holy Week, but also wanted to do something missional over the weekend. We decided to offer a prayer experience on Good Friday with an open church.
This featured an installation piece of a cross and thorns with stations to allow people to explore the events of Good Friday through creative prayer. As part of this experience, we were able to use the Hope Letters. These giant letters spelling the word Hope really helped us to fill the space and worked nicely into our narrative suggesting hope at the end of Good Friday.
We used the letters as the final station on our prayer journey, offering people the opportunity to write a prayer on a post-it note and stick it to the letters. It was really powerful to see the letters fill up with prayers throughout the day as different people engaged in prayer.
I think it was really helpful to have something that was practical to help lead people in prayer. Having a place to physically place a prayer certainly helped people. The letters were a huge part of this.
We kept the letters up for our service on Sunday, which helped us to tie in the events of the cross with resurrection. Once again, they filled the space and made Easter Day special for all those who came into the building.
