News update March 2019

Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him’ Psalm 40:3.
As we prepare to celebrate Easter and the good news about Jesus’ resurrection, we are praying that many more Christians will gain confidence to talk about the difference he makes in our lives. Easter is a natural time to invite friends and family to church for the first time. We are praying that churches will give guests ways to respond to the good news, to trust Jesus for themselves and to become his disciples.

We would love to serve you and your church as you make Jesus known. Do get in touch if we can support you in any way.

With loads of appreciation for all you do in Jesus’ name

Talking Jesus

‘I find that generally people are very open about the things of God,’ says Fran, one of the contributors to the Talking Jesus video course, pictured above left. ‘They are on a journey and are searching, so they do want to talk. It’s amazing the opportunities that present themselves. Often when you are chatting with people, there’s something that spurs them to talk about things of faith.’

In another conversation in the series, presenter Richard Smith meets Neil to talk about how he shares his faith at work. As Richard says, ‘Whether you live in a city or rural village, there are so many people in our lives – colleagues, family, friends and neighbours.’

The Talking Jesus course is a six-part video-based course available on USB or DVD. The videos are set in both city and village settings, an aspect that particularly appeals to smaller churches:  ‘We didn't feel that it’s not for us in our little rural churches,’ was the feedback from one church.

2020 planning
All over the UK churches, denominations and ministries are planning for mission in 2020. Advance 2020 is challenging evangelists to lead events where people can respond to Jesus. Some of these will be massive stadium events – some might be small group initiatives to make Jesus known. Amplify is the youth arm of Advance 2020 (find out more at

Dan Randall, our new youth director - pictured above with Roy Crowne, is playing a key part in planning this programme.
But it’s not just evangelists who are making plans. We are working with 24/7 Prayer, Bible Society, CPO and many others to provide ideas and resources to support local churches to reach whole communities with the good news of Jesus. The HOPE 2020 brochure sets out the vision – order copies free online from
Would you be a Mission Champion?
The congregation had dropped to just four. There were limited funds to repair the building, but the foursome decided to do what they could to renovate the worship space themselves. When they left the doors open to let the dust out, passers-by dropped in to ask what was happening. They didn’t attend the church, but they considered it to be their church. They were afraid it was going to close so they offered to help with the repairs. As a result 35 volunteers from the local community got involved in the renovations, including one ex-prisoner who introduced himself with the words: ‘You won’t want me!’ Now many have remained part of the church. What began as a last-ditch effort to preserve a building has become the starting point for a new lease of life for a small church at the heart of its community.

This is just one of the stories told at the Mission Champions Day as we met to explore ways to encourage churches to share faith with people in their communities. We want every church to have a Mission Champion – someone who encourages every church member to be effective witnesses to Jesus throughout the week. Find out more here
Making Jesus known online

Videos on YouTube have an increasing influence, with some YouTubers attracting almost 90 million subscribers. HOPE is working with the charity Speak Life to encourage the creative use of video in mission. The Speak Life Foundry is a training programme to forge evangelists and evangelistic resources that bless the church and reach the world. The residential 10-month programme for interns will be run by Speak Life, which has won numerous awards for its online outreach. Find out more and how to apply at
